AMD has become the fourth American semiconductor maker to surpass a $1 trillion market capitalization, buoyed by an intraday surge of nearly 10% in its shares.
The stock reached an all-time intraday high of $615.52, before closing up 9.6% at $613.31 on September 21.
This performance places AMD alongside Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron, the only other U.S.-based groups in the sector to have already crossed the threshold.
Nvidia, which crossed the $1 trillion mark as early as 2023, remains far ahead with a market capitalization above $5 trillion.
A strategy that goes beyond the chip
Beyond market conditions, AMD’s ascent reflects a strategic evolution.
The company no longer confines itself to selling standalone chips, but now offers complete systems that integrate processors, networking equipment and related hardware.
The California-based group is also tapping into growing demand for central processors used to complement graphics chips in servers dedicated to inference, a segment where it is nibbling away at Intel’s market share.
The second-quarter results, released in early August, had already illustrated this dynamic: revenue reached $11.54 billion, up 50% year over year, driven by a Data Center division that grew 107%, to $6.7 billion.
