In the race for AI, perhaps more than anywhere else, acquisitions are a way to save time and recruit talent.
Since 2022, AMD has built, through acquisitions, a value chain spanning adaptive silicon, networks, inference software, AI models, and data center infrastructure.
The acquisition of World Labs for about $8.2 billion, paid entirely in stock, marks a new milestone. AMD is aiming not only at processors and systems but also at expertise in models and research.
This AI laboratory, founded and led by Fei-Fei Li, a Stanford professor and a leading figure in AI, gives him direct access to expertise in AI models and spatial intelligence, at a moment when computing needs extend beyond language models.
Known for her computer vision research and for promoting a human-centered AI, Fei-Fei Li founded World Labs in 2024 to work on models capable of understanding and representing three-dimensional physical space. She will join AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su.
The deal is valued at roughly $8.2 billion and will take the form of a stock swap. AMD said closing is expected before the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
What World Labs Does
Headquartered in San Francisco, World Labs develops spatial intelligence models capable of generating, reconstructing, and simulating interactive 3D environments from text, images, or videos. The lab also works on learning and simulation technologies for robotics.
This positioning differs from that of the leading labs focused on large language models. AMD emphasizes the emergence of use cases related to reasoning, robotics, simulation, and “physical AI,” domains that impose more varied workloads and infrastructure requirements.
Lisa Su notes that building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI “requires an in-depth understanding of how models evolve.” Fei-Fei Li, for her part, mentions access to AMD’s resources and engineering depth to accelerate World Labs’ research and to define the infrastructure needed for the next era of AI.
The $8.2 billion price tag places the deal among AMD’s most significant acquisitions in its history since the iconic takeover of Xilinx in 2020—for $35 billion.
It could also bolster its ambition to provide AI infrastructure for an open ecosystem—a positioning that implicitly opposes the more integrated approaches of some market players.
World Labs operates in the same niche as AMI Labs, the startup founded by Yann LeCun after his departure from Meta. They develop “world models” and AI capable of understanding and acting in the physical world. World Labs, however, prioritizes spatial intelligence and the generation or simulation of 3D environments, whereas AMI Labs advocates a broader approach to machine intelligence, combining memory, reasoning, planning, and safety.
