The Canal+ media group has announced multi-year contracts with Google Cloud and OpenAI to integrate generative AI into its production processes and its streaming service.
These agreements aim to compete with Netflix’s recommendation algorithms, with Canal+ targeting 100 million subscribers by 2030.
“The two partnerships are very complementary,” said CEO Maxime Saada to Reuters. “Google focuses on data extraction. OpenAI powers the search and recommendation engine to improve the subscriber experience.” These technologies will index Canal+’s entire catalog to personalize recommendations.
“We will work on the data,” Saada clarified. Google’s models will identify every element of a scene in a film or TV show. Canal+ will then leverage these data with OpenAI to improve search and recommendation engines.
Veo 3 for Production Teams
From June 2026, Canal+ will roll out a new search system. No more keyword-based queries: subscribers will be able to phrase their requests in natural language and receive personalized suggestions. This rollout will cover the European and African markets where the Canal+ app is available.
Canal+ will also provide Veo 3 to its production teams. This Google video-generative AI tool will enable creators to preview scenes before shooting or reconstruct historic moments from archival photographs.
On intellectual property, Canal+ assures that the partnerships include robust protections. The group will retain rights and ownership of its content within Google’s secure Cloud environment.
