IBM acquires HRL Laboratories to double down on quantum computing

>IBM has formalized the acquisition of HRL Laboratories, a private research entity long associated with aerospace and automotive sectors through its shareholders Boeing and General Motors. The objective is to accelerate its ascent in high-end quantum computing, particularly in silicon qubit technologies and quantum sensing.

HRL is a leading California lab, active in advanced topics such as silicon-spin qubits, quantum sensors, cryogenics, control electronics, and the interconnection and packaging of qubits.

For IBM, already engaged in superconducting qubits, this acquisition adds a “second pillar” to its quantum strategy. The group is betting on a multi-technology approach rather than concentrating all its efforts on a single architecture.

A Second Technological Pillar for Quantum Computing

IBM notes that the two approaches (superconducting qubits and silicon qubits) both rely on silicon-based fabrication processes. A common foundation that could ease industrial synergies, particularly in scaling and integration.

The challenge is to move from laboratory quantum computing to more robust systems capable of handling real workloads. By internalizing HRL, IBM strengthens its control over the technology supply chain, from qubit physics to their packaging and integration.

IBM did not disclose the transaction amount but states that the deal remains subject to regulatory approvals, with closing expected by the end of the third quarter of 2026.

Boeing and General Motors, HRL’s longtime co-owners, will continue to collaborate with IBM on quantum applications and advanced technologies after the deal.

The Trump administration has also recently granted IBM $1 billion to create a new entity, Anderon, dedicated to the manufacturing of quantum chips in the United States.
