Synology DS1525+: Private Cloud for SMBs and Mid-Sized Enterprises

An installation within everyone’s reach

One of Synology’s enduring strengths is the ease of getting started. The DS1525+ embodies this maturity at its best: five tool-less bays (a small key is included in the box to lock the drawers if you want to secure them), a compact chassis, and clear connectivity. From unboxing to the DiskStation Manager (DSM) management interface, the entire setup process takes no more than about twenty minutes. No complex prerequisites, no reliance on an external provider: an internal administrator, even with limited experience, can deploy the NAS and run it autonomously.

Throughputs that fully leverage a fiber infrastructure

Directly connected to a fiber connection via Ethernet, the DS1525+ takes full advantage of its built-in 2.5 GbE ports. Our measurements, configured on an SHR volume with two 2 TB disks, show average speeds of around 200 MB/s write and 210 MB/s read for a single 10 GB file. Even with roughly a hundred smaller files, the speed remains high (170–180 MB/s). In short, the NAS nearly maxes out a fiber network, a decisive advantage for collaborative services or daily backups of workstations.

An application ecosystem that serves business needs

Beyond the chassis, it’s the DSM itself that makes the difference. Synology provides a complete software environment, without licensing fees, which turns the NAS into a true services platform.

  • Synology Drive is the cornerstone of this approach. The application transforms the NAS into a true private cloud, with all the features expected of a professional solution: multi-device synchronization (PC, Mac, mobile), browser-based remote access, secure link-based sharing, and fine-grained rights and quotas management. Drive also includes a granular versioning feature, allowing you to revert to a previous version of a file in case of mistake or corruption, without relying on a third-party provider. For hybrid teams or colleagues spread across several sites, it’s a tool that ensures continuity and fluidity while guaranteeing that data remains under the company’s control.
  • Active Backup for Business goes further by addressing one of the most critical needs: centralized backup. The solution covers the entire IT landscape: desktops, physical servers, virtual machines (VMware, Hyper-V), and even SaaS applications. All of this, without additional licenses, which is a major advantage over market solutions often priced per user or per volume. Active Backup enables you to schedule incremental backups, reduce bandwidth usage, and, above all, restore data quickly—whether it’s a single file, a full system, or a VM in production.

The installation of these applications takes only a few minutes, and their intuitive design allows rapid adoption, even outside a centralized IT department.

Active Backup for Business: a demonstrated return on investment

The value of Active Backup for Business isn’t just theoretical. The French hospital group GHT Loiret deployed the solution to unify and automate its backup strategy. Result: more than €90,000 in annual savings thanks to consolidating existing systems and eliminating third-party licenses. This concrete case perfectly illustrates the added value of Synology’s ecosystem for organizations seeking to streamline costs while strengthening data security.

Mobility and service continuity

Remote access remains a key criterion for hybrid organizations. With QuickConnect, we accessed the DSM interface from a 5G smartphone in seconds and launched a Full HD video playback stored on the NAS with an almost instant start. Uploading a one-gigabyte file from outside took around two and a half minutes, a result more than adequate for everyday use, even on the go.

Quiet and controlled operation

Performance isn’t limited to throughput. In an office environment, acoustic comfort is essential. In standby, the DS1525+ stays below 22 dB(A), a nearly imperceptible level. Under load, during heavy transfers, noise does not exceed 26 dB(A), while the disks maintain a stable temperature around 38 °C. A level of discretion that eases its integration into a shared workspace.

Security and scalability, two strategic axes

Synology places security at the heart of its proposition. The DS1525+ includes a comprehensive suite of backup, snapshots, and adaptive multifactor authentication. The 3-2-1 rule (three copies, two media, one off-site) can be implemented at no extra software cost. In terms of capacity, the five bays support consolidating up to 100 TB of data, and adding the DX525 expansion brings the potential up to 300 TB, ensuring ample growth room for expanding businesses.

Verdict for IT decision-makers

The Synology DS1525+ embodies the evolution of the NAS into a true infrastructure brick, capable of competing with certain cloud offerings while returning control of data to organizations. Easy to deploy, high performance on a fiber network, and remarkably quiet, it positions itself as a strategic choice for small and medium-sized enterprises, mid-sized firms, or subsidiaries of large groups seeking a centralized storage, collaboration, and reliable backup solution.

In short: an investment that secures the company’s digital assets while avoiding dependence on recurring cloud subscriptions.
