There are departures that feel like turning a page in a book, and Jeff Dean’s exit is one that rips the page right open.
At 58, the man is leaving the company he joined in mid-1999 as the thirtieth employee, during an era when Google was still growing from a search engine in the making.
Until his departure, he officially held the post of Chief Scientist at Google, a role defined by his own bio as steering the company’s advances in artificial intelligence for Google DeepMind and Google Research. He is also one of the technical co-leads of the Gemini project.

No engineer has shaped Google’s technical DNA as profoundly as Jeff Dean. Alongside his longtime partner Sanjay Ghemawat, he designed the distributed systems that enabled the search engine to scale to billions of queries from users around the world in the 2000s.
Jeff Dean’s professional biography makes it possible to date these efforts with precision: MapReduce, presented at OSDI in 2004; BigTable, unveiled in 2006, which to this day handles more than six billion queries per second at peak activity for more than ten exabytes of data managed; and Spanner, his globally distributed database with strong consistency, introduced in 2012.
A Builder of Google’s Infrastructure
Jeff Dean also oversaw the creation of TensorFlow, the deep-learning library Google chose to open-source in 2015, which remains in use by millions of developers, and Pathways, the more recent architecture designed to train massive models like PaLM.
It was also him who launched Google Brain in 2011, Google’s deep-learning research laboratory, which sparked the industry-wide AI gold rush long before ChatGPT.
In 2012, Jeff Dean, together with Sanjay Ghemawat, received the ACM Prize in Computing for their fundamental contributions to Internet-scale distributed systems. Internally, they are still, to this day, the only two Google employees to hold the title of “senior fellow,” the company’s highest technical distinction.
Yet Jeff Dean is not merely an executive; he is a cult figure.
Google staff have long joked about his legendary technical prowess with “Jeff Dean Facts.” The most famous quip? “His résumé would be shorter if it listed what he hasn’t done rather than what he has accomplished.”
According to Business Insider, which collected several messages posted on the company’s internal forum, his departure sparked a fresh wave of memes, with some employees poking fun at the idea that his talents could finally be put to use by others outside Google. Examples included, “Google isn’t losing Jeff Dean. Google is finally making him available to humanity in open source,” or “He’s leaving Google so that progress in ML can catch up to Jeff Dean.”
An Almost Mythical Aura Inside the Company
Sundar Pichai, the head of Alphabet, praised Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat in an internal message cited by The New York Times for their roles in several of the group’s major technological transitions, from early search infrastructure to neural networks at the heart of today’s AI era.
According to Wired, he reportedly held numerous meetings with Jeff Dean, attempting to persuade him and his team to stay at Google.
His departure comes amid a period of turbulence for Google’s AI division. The flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro has fallen behind its initial schedule, while OpenAI and Anthropic continue to push the state of the art forward.
Several senior researchers have already left in recent months. Noam Shazeer departed for OpenAI, while John Jumper — co-laureate of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Demis Hassabis for AlphaFold — was recruited by Anthropic.
According to Axios, some departures were also driven by discontent with the April agreement between Google and the Pentagon, which allows the U.S. military to use the company’s technologies.
Jeff Dean himself had publicly weighed in on sensitive political topics in recent months and had supported Anthropic’s position in its legal dispute with the Defense Department.
Discovery Loop, a New Venture
But now, at the helm of Discovery Loop — a mission-driven company — he will deploy his talents in a new arena.
He is joined by three other Google veterans: his trusted ally Sanjay Ghemawat, as well as Quoc Le — co-founder of Google Brain and the originator of AutoML-Zero — and Oriol Vinyals — former VP of research at DeepMind and co-technical director of Gemini.

Their aim is to automate the experimental loops of scientific and technical research using AI, with anticipated applications in computer hardware design, drug discovery, and clean energy.
Alphabet will own a stake in the project and will provide the computational power required at least for the first year. Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures are co-leading the funding round, though the total amount has not been disclosed.
