Developer Productivity: How Pure-Play Firms Are Under Pressure

Will autonomous solutions for tracking developers’ productivity have a future?

Gartner’s inaugural Magic Quadrant dedicated to this space invites doubt. The American research firm argues that on this market, which it had recently been calling software engineering intelligence, the pure players are under pressure from broader tool providers, such as developer portals. It cites Port and Harness as examples.

Another challenge: staying the “source of truth” in the face of AI coding tools that themselves supply productivity indicators, albeit less exhaustive and generally lacking the SDLC context.

13 providers, 5 “leaders”

Compared with other segments of the IT market, this one carries limited value. Gartner estimates it at about $400 million. It does, however, view Atlassian’s acquisition of DX (a $1 billion deal in November 2025) as a testament to its importance.

Reflecting this modest weight, the 2025 revenue threshold to qualify for the Magic Quadrant was set at $6 million (licenses + subscriptions, excluding support and professional services). It also required a client portfolio consisting of at least 20 organizations with 500 employees or more.

Functionally, the mandatory baseline was fairly narrow. Optional among others were:

  • Measuring adoption, cost, and impact of GenAI tools
  • Scenario simulations (team size, scope, shifting priorities)
  • Prediction of delivery risks
  • Natural language processing on tickets, commits, and comments
  • Gamification
  • AI retrospectives within sprint cycles
  • GitOps and PaC management
  • Webhooks

The “execution” axis of the Magic Quadrant reflects the ability to meet demand (quality of products/services, business viability, customer experience, pricing…). Providers are positioned on this axis as follows:

Cive five providers are sufficiently advanced on both axes to be considered “leaders” in developer productivity tracking: Atlassian, Jellyfish, LinearB, Opsera, and Swarmia.

Atlassian stands out for the geographic breadth of its footprint (localized products, dedicated sales teams, data residency options). Gartner also praises the completeness of its DX Core 4 framework (which encapsulates DORA, SPACE, and DevEx). And its DX AI Measurement Framework, designed to track AI usage.

DX, however, lacks automation capabilities (assignment of reviews, estimation of delivery risk…). It also lacks certain certifications (C5, SOC 1). Gartner further notes that the solution carries a lock-in risk: now that Atlassian has taken it on, there could be a tendency to deprioritize integrations with competing DevOps tools.

Pricing is inflexible at Jellyfish

Jellyfish stands out for its ability to target decision-makers and engineering leaders (VPs, CTOs…). Like Atlassian, it has adapted to the AI phenomenon, with a dedicated module and features to monitor the use of coding assistants. Gartner also appreciates its ability to connect investments to business impact.

Given the focus on decision-makers, developers are likely to perceive Jellyfish as a management solution rather than a tool aimed at them. Also watch for pricing inflexibility (no usage-based payments or unlimited license options) and for a limited sectoral strategy.

With LinearB, watch the onboarding effort

LinearB also succeeds in effectively targeting engineering leaders. It stands out for its market listening (studies, feedback analysis, and product usage). And for its handling of coding assistants.

As with Jellyfish, the sector-focused approach is not well developed. Relative to some competitors, the qualitative data collection (surveys) lacks depth. Gartner notes that onboarding can be challenging, citing the sheer volume of metrics, the admin interface, and the complexities of aggregating sources.

Opsera, subject to dependencies

Opsera earns praise for its ability to leverage insights to trigger autonomous actions. Its sectoral strategy earns it another advantage, as does its capacity to target both developers and decision-makers. Gartner also lauds its “factory model” approach, which, with integrator partners, enables rapid deployments.

Given that its customer base is largely in North America, it will be important to ensure the availability of support resources and partners in other geographic regions. One should also keep in mind the dependency risks associated with using external AI (GitHub Copilot, Windsurf). Deployment and integrations can also be demanding, particularly due to gaps in documentation.

No native AI agent yet for Swarmia

Another player distinguishing itself in AI impact tracking is Swarmia. It also sets itself apart with its “working agreements” system—personalized objectives supported by nudges to reach them. Gartner also values its Investment Balance Dashboard, which helps steer roadmaps.

Swarmia is available exclusively in cloud mode. A potential barrier, even though the agent secures outbound connections. Gartner also regrets the absence of native AI agents for tasks such as code review, ticket triage, and documentation updates. It notes a limited number of integrations with bug-tracking systems and non-standard CI/CD tools.
