MariaDB Acquires Galera Cluster

MariaDB has acquired the Finnish company Codership and its flagship product, Galera Cluster. This move is aimed at strengthening the integration of Galera’s synchronous replication technology within the MariaDB Enterprise platform, with the objective of boosting database high availability and scalability.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

With this acquisition, the core Galera team, including its founders, will join MariaDB. This should reinforce MariaDB’s engineering and technical support teams in Europe.

Galera Cluster has maintained a close relationship with MariaDB for nearly 14 years, notably through partnerships and technical integrations. The service has been a standard part of MariaDB Server for more than nine years. Today, over a third of MariaDB Enterprise Platform customers rely on Galera Cluster. This collaboration has become increasingly relevant in the face of rising demand for high availability and zero data loss in high-volume production environments.

Galera Cluster is a high-availability solution for relational databases, notably MySQL and MariaDB. Its core feature is multi-master synchronous replication, meaning that all database instances in the cluster can accept writes concurrently, and all changes are replicated in real time across all nodes.
