Emmanuel Marill announced the news in a LinkedIn post: “I am truly delighted to announce that I am joining OpenAI as the chief executive officer for the EMEA region,” he wrote.
Based in Paris, with an office opened in December 2024 and counting around forty employees in France, Marill will focus on structuring and accelerating OpenAI’s operations in a high-potential yet heavily regulated area. He will report to Jason Kwon, OpenAI’s head of strategy.
Weekly active users of ChatGPT in the EMEA region have increased by about 70% year over year, with Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Spain among its main markets. Nevertheless, OpenAI faces mounting regulatory pressures from the European Union.
Marill comes to OpenAI with roughly fifteen years in tech. After stints at Groupon and Meta, he joined Airbnb in 2016 to lead the platform’s French operations, before taking charge of EMEA activities in 2020. He also led the Asia-Pacific branch for two years, spending a total of a decade at Airbnb.
