Outscale Launches Managed Kubernetes Service: What You Need to Know to Get Started

Availability of Multiregion Cloud Services?

Is there a plan to offer multi-region cloud availability outside of Europe? Are there prospects for multi-zone management? Could we soon see pools capable of containing various types of worker nodes?

Currently, OUTSCALE’s managed Kubernetes service does not yet provide access to these features. It’s important to note that the service was only recently officially launched. Its development is based on an acquisition announced in April 2024: the purchase of the cloud managed service provider Satelliz.

Since then, OUTSCALE has regularly promised the impending release of this offering. A dedicated webpage has been available since at least September of the previous year. At that time, the service was described as being compliant with legal requirements. Today, the focus is on complete cluster isolation, with the infrastructure now qualified under the SecNumCloud standard. However, there is still no publicly available pricing information.

Clusters Supporting Up to 400 Nodes

The OUTSCALE Kubernetes Service (OKS) currently supports Kubernetes versions 1.29, 1.30, and 1.31. When it comes to control plane sizing, four options are offered:

  • A single master node with 4 GB of RAM, non-scalable (suitable for up to 10 nodes)
  • Three master nodes, each with 4 GB of RAM (supporting around 50 nodes)
  • Three master nodes, each with 8 GB of RAM (supporting around 200 nodes)
  • Three master nodes, each with 16 GB of RAM (supporting up to 400 nodes)

The worker nodes are intentionally not visible or directly accessible via the OUTSCALE account. This is a deliberate choice, aligning with the “cattle, not pets” management model, which emphasizes automated and disposable infrastructure over manual intervention.

Initially, OKS is available in the OUTSCALE regions of eu-west-2 and cloudgov-eu-west-1. It also manages GPU resources within worker pools, enhancing its suitability for more demanding workloads.
